What is Wine Tasting?

Posted on Tue October 14, 2025.

The warm days, vineyard views, and swirling glasses can only mean one thing wine tasting season has officially begun in Stellenbosch. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned sipper, wine tasting is more than just drinking; it’s an experience that connects people to the land, the vines, and the story behind every bottle.

But what exactly is wine tasting, and how can you make the most of it?

1. Understanding the Art of Wine Tasting

At its heart, wine tasting is about exploring and appreciating wine through your senses sight, smell, and taste. It’s the process of slowing down and paying attention to what’s in your glass, from colour and aroma to flavour and texture.

Wine tasting helps you identify what you enjoy whether it’s a crisp Sauvignon Blanc or a bold Cabernet Sauvignon and understand how the winemaker’s choices shape each sip.

2. The Five Steps of Wine Tasting

1. Look:
Hold your glass against a light background. Notice the colour — is it pale and clear, or deep and rich? The hue gives clues about the wine’s age and grape variety.

2. Swirl:
Gently swirl the glass to release the wine’s aromas. It’s not just for show; oxygen helps open up the bouquet.

3. Smell:
Bring your nose to the glass and take a slow sniff. You might pick up notes of fruit, flowers, herbs, or oak. Every wine has its own personality.

4. Sip:
Take a small sip and let it move around your mouth. Pay attention to the flavours — are they fruity, spicy, earthy, or floral?

5. Savour:
Notice the aftertaste, or “finish.” A long, pleasant finish often signals a well-made wine.

3. Wine Tasting Etiquette

You don’t need to be an expert wine tasting is meant to be relaxed and enjoyable. A few friendly tips:

  • It’s perfectly fine to spit (yes, really!) if you’re tasting several wines it helps you stay clear-headed.
  • Ask questions winemakers love sharing their passion.
  • Avoid heavy perfumes they interfere with your sense of smell.
  • Drink water between tastings to stay hydrated.

4. Stellenbosch: The Heart of South African Wine

Stellenbosch is one of the oldest and most respected wine regions in South Africa, known for its mountain views, elegant estates, and a mix of traditional and modern winemaking. Whether you prefer a guided tour or a relaxed afternoon at a wine farm, there’s something for everyone from classic tastings to chocolate pairings and vineyard picnics.
