Our Top 5: Hiking Trails in and around Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the Western Cape, and the hiking trails here are nothing short of spectacular. Whether you're after a gentle morning walk or a full-day mountain challenge, there is a trail for every fitness level. Here are our five favourites.

1. Jonkershoek Waterfalls Day Hiking Trail

One of the most popular hikes in the area, this trail takes you deep into the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve along a path flanked by lush fynbos and towering mountains. The highlight is two spectacular waterfalls - perfect for a picnic or a refreshing break on a warm day.

Difficulty: Moderate | Distance: 6.4km there and back

2. Uitkyk via Du Toitskop and Manganese Trail

For experienced hikers looking for a challenge, this trail delivers. It starts off relatively gently before ascending Du Toitskop, rewarding you with panoramic views over the Jonkershoek Valley and surrounding mountains. One of the more demanding routes in the area, but well worth the effort.

Difficulty: Difficult | Distance: 18km

3. Banhoek Conservancy Waterfall Hike

A hidden gem in the beautiful Banhoek Valley, this trail winds through vineyards and mountains to a tranquil waterfall. A great option for families or anyone looking for a rewarding outing without too much exertion.

Difficulty: Moderate | Distance: 5-6km

4. Eden Waterfall Trail (Alwynskloof)

A short but beautiful trail through lush forest vegetation, leading to a picturesque waterfall in the Eden Forest. Perfect for a morning or afternoon outing, with the soothing sounds of the waterfall making it a genuinely peaceful escape.

Difficulty: Easy | Distance: 3-4km

5. Bergpad

Starting in the Coetzenburg area, just a short distance from the guest house, the Bergpad takes you along the mountain ridges above Stellenbosch with sweeping views over the town, vineyards, and surrounding mountains. Well-maintained and accessible for most fitness levels.
