A Year in Bloom: The Fynbos Walls of Bonne Esperance

There's a particular kind of light that falls across Stellenbosch in early spring — the kind that catches on a sugarbush just opening, or turns a pincushion the colour of a struck match. It's the same light that falls over a fynbos farm outside Stanford, where, for one whole year, someone paid very close attention.

That was the year one of Bonne Esperance's owners set herself a quiet task: to walk the farm each morning, find whatever had opened overnight, and sketch it before the day moved on. A king protea one day. A wild gladiolus the next. Then a sprig of buchu, a spider orchid, a stand of restios catching the wind. Flower by flower, day by day, the sketches grew into something far bigger than she'd planned — a full record of everything that bloomed on the farm across twelve months, and with it, an unlikely portrait of just how staggeringly biodiverse fynbos really is. It became a book, My Fynbos Year — proof, page after page, that no two days in this landscape ever flower quite the same.

Why the walls needed fynbos

When it came time to choose new wallpaper for the guest house, there was really only one place to look.

Bonne Esperance sits inside the Cape Floral Kingdom — the smallest of the world's six floral kingdoms, and by far the richest in plant life, packed with more species per square metre than almost anywhere else on Earth. We're also, quite literally, across the road from the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden, where a fraction of that abundance is tended, labelled, and walked among every day. And we are surrounded by the Stellenbosch mountains, where the rare blue Disa flowers.

So the walls needed fynbos. Real fynbos — not a generic botanical print bought off a shelf, but the actual flora of this actual place.

Bringing in Hermien van der Merwe and Cara Saven Wall Design

When we heard about the collaboration between Cara Saven Wall Design and Cape Town artist Hermien van der Merwe, we knew instantly we'd found the paintbrush we'd been looking for — one that could bring the fynbos growing on the mountains around Stellenbosch, and across the street in the Botanical Garden, onto our walls: proteas unfurling, pincushions in their impossible variety, the low silver-green tangle of restios and “Blombos”.

Her work carries the same patient, close attention that shaped My Fynbos Year — the eye of someone who has actually knelt down to look, day after day, at a landscape that never stops surprising.

“To me, the essence of art is in seeing. With my eyes, I see the beauty of colours, textures and shapes in nature and I replicate this in paint and ink onto my surface. A botanical world, inside and out

Now guests wake up inside that same botanical world they can step out and see for themselves. Cross the road, and it's growing right there in the garden beds. Hike the mountains around Stellenbosch for the breathtaking views, and you'll find it again underfoot — kneel down, and the detail is every bit as extraordinary up close. Stay inside, and it's blooming quietly on the walls, unhurried, one species after another, exactly as it did through that year when a sketchbook and a farm full of fynbos revealed just how much life one small corner of the world can hold.
